The George Washington Inaugural Bible was printed in London in 1767. It is best known as the Bible upon which George Washington swore his oath of office when inaugurated as the first President of the United States in 1789.

George Washington took the Presidential oath with his hand placed over the 49th and 50th chapters of Genesis. Chancellor Robert Livingston creased the upper right hand corner of the page to mark its location, and it is still evident today. An engraved image of George Washington and a description of the event were added shortly thereafter to commemorate the occasion.

Since that time, the George Washington Bible has served in the inaugurations of many other Presidents and has been present at several Presidential funeral processions. It was also utilized at the dedication of the Washington Memorial and the cornerstone ceremonies in the construction of the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and the Statue of Liberty.
